In the old times, Beauty Pageants were only for those who were not married. Strict rules on height requirements and body statistics were implemented. As years pass by, it’s been realised by pageantries that there is also a place for women with children or no children. The purpose of this is to empower the family women and to boost their self-confidence; that getting married and having a family does not stop them from personality development and fulfilling their dreams to be a Beauty Queen.
Married women in New Zealand have also the opportunity to take part in Beauty Pageants. The first “Mrs New Zealand” contest was held in 1960. The crowned Mrs New Zealand 1960 was Mrs Sicily, followed by Mrs Coates in 1962. It was not a yearly competition. The last time that there was a Mrs New Zealand pageant was in 2017. Anna Marie Boado Parrant who was awarded the Mrs New Zealand 2017 – Community Service has thought of bringing to New Zealand the “Mrs Universe” title. With her experiences in joining pageants and organising events, she got the sole and exclusive rights to be the National Director of Mrs Universe in New Zealand starting in 2019.
The purpose of bringing this in the country is to unite women to work against Domestic Violence. These are the women who can use their beauty for the sake of a big cause. It is devoted to young children, women and men who are abused, suffer home violence or abandoned. Winning the main title is not all about beauty and brain, it is also community involvement that makes it remarkable to be a role model as well as deserving to be called beauty queen. Hence, the trademark of the Mrs Universe New Zealand is a heart that is wearing a crown. Beauty can not only be seen on physical aspect, but it is also visible in the heart.
To be in this pageant, you must be married or previously married, New Zealand citizen or permanent resident, currently living in New Zealand, at the age of 21 to 55 years old, and involved in the community. Apart from the Catwalk rounds, Question & Answer portion is also a part in the judging criteria. The woman that is crowned as Mrs Universe New Zealand is sent overseas to compete with other beautiful women from all over the Universe. It is a friendly competition as they share their own culture and be an Ambassador of the country that they represent.
NOTE: The Mrs Universe New Zealand pageant is not associated with any other local or national pageants in New Zealand.
